High School Musical
Games, DVDs, Ice Tour - What Next!?
High School Musical is a huge phenomenon. It is one of Disney’s most successful Disney Channel Original Movies, and such is its popularity that it has spawned a huge amount of merchandising.
Both ‘High School Musical’ and the follow up ‘High School Musical 2’ are available in DVD, although the original HSM DVD can be quite hard to find!
High School Musical Games are the most common HSM tie-in. There is a DVD board game, which is an action packed quiz game. You become one of six characters (Gabriella, Troy, Sharpay, Ryan, Taylor, and Chad) and answer trivia questions, spot the genuine scene stills, sing in the blanks of your favourite HSM songs, and even complete the missing dance moves to get your character through the audition process for your role in the musical!
The High School Musical Dance Mat is another interactive DVD game, this time letting you dance along to your favourite HSM songs. The game includes headset microphone, instructional dance mat plus an inflatable basketball!
If singing rather than dancing is your forte High School Musical - Sing It! is a game for the PS2, Nintendo Wii or Nintendo DS which includes a microphone so that you can sing along to all your HSM favourite songs.
You can even buy High School Musical Action Figures of Gabriella, Troy and Sharpay. If you want to have an HSM party you can buy High School Musical party supplies with pictures of the cast printed in it, including plates, cups, tablecloths, initiations and loot bags.
For the devoted HSM fan you can decorate your whole bedroom, with High School Musical bedding and curtains. Snuggle down under a duvet with the design of your favourite HSM characters and have ‘stage curtains’ up at your window. You can even stick High School Musical Art Squares on your walls (and they are removable if you want to change your room around).
For the diehard fan, there is HSM clothing such as T-shirts, pyjamas, and cheerleader dress-up sets, books and even an LCD TV in the style of a High School Musical Locker – bright red with locker-style dials!
Until the end of February 2008 you can watch Disney's High School Musical - The Ice Tour, a live fusion of songs, dance and team-spirited fun inspired by the smash hit Disney Channel Original Movies. The show covers the story of High School Musical in the first half and High School Musical 2 in the second half, in an amazing ice show starring a cast of world-class skaters.
High School Musical - The Ice Tour has been so successful that another tour has already been scheduled for early 2009 and tickets are already on sale at some venues.
High School Musical on Stage! is the name of the HSM stage musical. Already a huge hit in the US, it is booked to play at the Hammersmith Apollo for six weeks in autumn 2008. The plot for this show sticks to the story of the original HSM TV movie.
So what is High School Musical all about?
The main protagonists are Gabriella Montez, played by Vanessa Anne Hudgens (Thunderbirds) and Troy Bolton (Hairspray). The plot, like that of West Side Story is loosely based on that of Romeo and Juliet. A boy and girl from rival cliques meet on holiday and sing together in a karaoke competition. On their return home Gabriella changes school to East High School and Troy and Gabriella discover that they are now both at the same school. They start to date, and both decide to audition for the school musical.
However as Troy is the star of the basketball team and Gabriella a maths whizz both are expected to represent the school with their respective talents and their friends discourage them from getting involved in the school musical. To make matters worse, school diva Sharpay Evans and her brother Ryan have always taken the lead roles in school productions and try to trick Troy and Gabriella so that they lose the lead roles. The trick fails and they do get the lead roles, and not only is the show a huge success but Troy also wins his basketball match and Gabriella wins the scholastic decathlon.
The soundtrack to High School Musical is hugely popular. Probably the best known song is ‘We’re All In This Together’, which is the finale of the original HSM story. The other top songs from HSM are ‘Get'cha Head in the Game ’, ‘Stick to the Status Quo’, ‘Bop to the Top’ and ‘Breaking Free.’
The popularity of High School Musical and High School Musical 2 mean that High School Musical 3 is now in production. At time of writing all the original cast have signed up to reprise their roles. This film will not be made for TV but as a theatrical release for the cinema and is planned for release in the US in September 2008.
